Roni Size needs heroes

Some people said you don’t mess with classic. Well, Roni Size did the exact opposite of that. He chose to re-work the Mercury award winning classic New Forms by giving it a 2008 rework. Drum’n'bass is one of those genre that quickly evolving into new forms all the time and despite it’s status as a classic album, New Forms starts to show it’s age. This is where the concept of New Forms 2 comes in. The idea was to do an updated version to New Form and giving it that modern drum’n'bass sound. In a way, he succeeded but on the other hand, where the original New Forms was a breakthrough, the new version somehow becomes just another d’n'b album. It doesn’t mean that its bad, it’s just that it lacks that special feel that original can give to you. I still think it’s one of the better drum’n'bass album of ’08 though.

Armand Van Helden having some cheap thrills

There are tons of remixes of Herve’s Cheap Thrills. The Count remix is the one that most people talk about but I think it’s still a bit similar to the original. Armand Van Helden’s remix on the other hand is just bad ass. He gives it a tougher edge and attitude not to be messed with.

Switch is holding on

Switch a.k.a. Dave Taylor is one of those producers that totally inspires me. I started following his work when he was still under his alias Solid Groove. But he totally hits the bonker level when he started Swith with Trevor Loveys. Now, Switch is just Dave Taylor and it couldn’t be any better.

This time around he tackle sanother track from indie dance darling “Hot Chip (Over and Over was remixed by him under his Solid Groove alias)”. He provide us with two different remixes. The LA and LDN remix are two contrasting styles, yet never strayed too far from Dave Taylor trademark sound. If it’s up to me, I’d rather call the LA mix as Switch remix with its quirky breakdowns and edits that has become staple in Switch’s production, while the LDN mix renamed as Solid Groove remix due to it’s groovin’ and jackin’ sound.

I like them both and each one of them have their place in my typical DJ sets. Well, I should just let you decide which one you prefer.

Radiohead found street spirits

This is is kinda old and a bit of departure from the usual stuff posted here. Yet, I found this remix by Funkagenda to be a pretty good one. It has one of those deep progressive feel to it without losing the melancholic sound that has become signature to Radiohead.
